Major Collie art award a celebration of identity

Australia’s biggest regional art award was an ideal opportunity for International Graphite to show its support for the transformative changes taking place at Collie, home of our downstream processing operations, in Western Australia.

International Graphite’s sponsorship contributed to this year’s Collie Art Prize – part of the company’s ongoing commitment to the Collie community.

Artists from around the country competed for the prestigious $50,000 award with the major prize going to Jo Darvall for a large format painting entitled “Boranup Forest Light”.

This year’s competition focused on the theme of ‘Identity’, reflecting the town’s rapid transition and growth.

Collie’s plans to move from a coal mining economy to a renewables power hub and tourist destination has been instrumental in International Graphite’s decision to establish its flagship facilities in the regional town which has long been the centre of Western Australia’s main electricity supply.

In the future, the company expects to build a local team and will be looking to recruit locally as the business grows and moves to commercial scale operations.

The Collie Art Prize is organised every two years by the Collie Art Gallery.  Other awards include:

  • Rotary Club of Collie Prize I – “Constructive Dreamscapes” by Lorraine Defleur
  • Rotary Club of Collie Prize II – “Umi 21” by Emi Ninoseki
  • Best work by a WA artist – “Back in This Place” by Stef Rae
  • Pollie Packers Prize – “Self and Nurture” by Khashayar Salmanzadeh
